The sea is our principal source of life. The world’s oceans not only provide us with water and oxygen, but also food, raw materials and energy, and also regulate the weather. However, this natural wealth is seriously endangered due to human-induced pollution. The contamination of our seas is a global threat that must be tackled from dry land, because the waste we fail to process effectively on land inevitably ends up in the sea.
A commitment to the planet with no specific time or place
World Clean Up Day mobilises millions of people in over 190 countries who come together to clean up beaches, parks, streets and rivers in an amazing display of the power of collective action. However, at Palma Aquarium and our Foundation, this commitment lasts for much longer than a day. Indeed, we work all year round to protect our oceans and ecosystems, cleaning up the Balearic Islands’ beaches, streams and woods. Caring for the environment is a daily task, where small gestures can make a big difference to the conservation of biodiversity and guarantee a healthier future.
2024 and 2023 cleanups: A joint effort
Over the course of 2024, the Palma Aquarium Foundation has organised 9 cleanup days, collecting a total of 445.25 kg of waste. The cleanups were held on sites such as Playa de Palma beach (from Es Carnatge to S’Arenal) as well as Cala Ferrera Stream and Bellver Wood. These initiatives were possible thanks to the collaboration of more than 500 people, including organisations that share our undertaking such as CaixaBank, Svenska Skolan, Mallorca Incentives, CEIP Costa i Llobera and HBX Group. These joint efforts are an example of how working together to protect our environment can make a real difference.
2023 was also noteworthy in this respect. The Palma Aquarium Foundation cleaned up no fewer than 22 beaches in the Balearic Islands, removing 335.35 kg of waste with the participation of just under 900 people. These figures not only prove the positive impact these cleanups have, but are also a reminder of the vital need for active and constant ecological awareness. Every effort, great or small, is essential in order to maintain a clean and healthy environment.
Palma Aquarium takes part in Europa FM’s Alerta ECO
In September 2024, Palma Aquarium participated in Europa FM’s Alerta ECO event, a waste collection initiative at Can Pere Antoni beach in Palma. In addition to the cleanup, Palma Aquarium and our Foundation ran environmental awareness workshops and carried out a marine wildlife rescue drill: an educational opportunity for everyone involved!
The event was a great success, combining environmental awareness and fun. Events of this type not only help to keep our coasts clean, but also drive environmental education, which is essential for future generations.
Citizen participation is the answer!
Community involvement is vital in order to keep our beaches healthy. Beach cleanups not only eliminate waste from the environment, but also raise awareness and promote a sense of collective responsibility. Every cigarette butt, every bottle we remove is another step forward in the drive for a cleaner, purer environment.
