What should I do if I find a sea turtle that is injured or in danger?

In 2023, the Palma Aquarium Foundation’s Rescue Centre provided assistance for 83 sea turtles (49 on Mallorca, 14 on Menorca and 20 on Ibiza and Formentera). Thanks to the hard work, dedication and professionalism of the technical team and volunteers, 26 sea turtles made a full recovery and were released back into their natural habitat. This is why it is so important to be familiar with the steps you should take if you come across a sea turtle in danger.

Rescue protocol for sea turtles

  1. Call 112 and report the situation. If you are on a vessel, you should bring the sea turtle on board if told to do so by the Palma Aquarium Foundation expert.
  2. Do not remove any lines, hooks, threads, plastics or nets that are placing pressure on the turtle’s limbs, as this may be harmful and do more damage than good. You must also avoid turning the turtle over.
  3. Do not return the turtle to the sea Sea turtles are incredibly strong, but it is impossible to verify that the animal is well unless it is checked by a vet. Although nothing may appear to be wrong, it may have swallowed plastic, hooks or have some type of disease, such as pneumonia.
  4. Protect the animal by putting it in the shade and placing a wet towel over its body, leaving the head and cloaca uncovered.

The Palma Aquarium Foundation Recovery Centre will send staff to the location where the animal was found. From there, it will be taken to a veterinary clinic for the corresponding tests and later treatment and rehabilitation. Once the animal is in optimum condition, it will be released back into its natural environment.

What can you do to reduce the number of strandings?

  1. Do not throw waste into the sea.
  2. Always carry a foldable bag with you that is not made for a single use, such as a cloth bag.
  3. Reuse the plastic bags you have at home and recycle damaged or ripped bags.
  4. Educate and tell those around you about the situation so that they too can contribute to reducing the number of strandings.
  5. Join a volunteer programme to help animals.

Your help is vital for the protection of sea turtles!
