At Palma Aquarium we remain committed to protecting the environment and fighting climate change. For this reason, we are delighted to announce the opening of our new 570 kWp self-consumption solar plant, built in collaboration with Endesa. This installation not only boosts our commitment to sustainability, but also represents a breakthrough in the use of renewable energies in our facilities.
Committed to clean energy
Palma Aquarium’s new solar power plant has an annual production capacity of 670 MWh, which allows us to reduce our energy consumption from the conventional electricity grid by 20%. This means that one fifth of the energy we use in our facilities now comes from the sun, a clean and inexhaustible energy source.
Part of this installation has been fitted onto the roof of the shark tank, one of our most iconic spaces. Thanks to this innovative installation, we have managed to cut CO2 emissions by 206 tons a year. This is a significant milestone in our ongoing commitment to mitigating the impact of climate change and promoting the use of clean energy.
Promoting sustainable mobility
Yet, our commitment to sustainability doesn’t end there. In addition to the solar plant, Palma Aquarium has installed four charging points for electric vehicles, each with a capacity of 7.4 kW. These new charging points make it easier for our visitors to use electric vehicles, thus contributing to sustainable mobility and the reduction of polluting gas emissions.
A two-phase project
This solar power plant was developed in two phases. The first, which got underway in 2023, consisted of the installation of a 400,495 kWp, with seven hundred and nineteen 545 Wp solar panels and sixteen 540 Wp panels, as well as 5 inverters. Work during this initial phase was centred on installing panels on the ground, the roof of the main building and the shark tank roof. This first phase has enabled us to reduce our annual consumption from the conventional electrical grid by 14%.
Phase two, which involved the addition of a further 168.85 kWp, was installed on a canopy, comprising two hundred and ninety-six 540 Wp panels and another 2 inverters. This extension produces around 211,576 kWh a year, enabling us to reduce our energy consumption from the conventional electrical grid by another 6%. In all, these two phases put our annual production at a total of 670 MWh.
Committed to innovation and the future
The implementation of this self-consumption solar power plant and the charging points for electric vehicles not only represents a step forward in the drive for sustainability, but also underpins our commitment to technological innovation, the promotion of clean energy, the development of sustainable infrastructures and the fight against climate change.
Palma Aquarium and Endesa share a determined long-term commitment to moving forward together on the road toward decarbonization, energy transition and sustainability.
The Regional Minister for Business, Employment and Energy, Alejandro Sáenz de San Pedro, Palma Aquarium’s CEO, Joan Rams, and the Managing Director of Endesa in the Balearic Islands, Martí Ribas, attended the opening of these new facilities, evidencing the importance of this project for Palma Aquarium and the future of energy in the Balearic Islands.
