Coral reefs rank among the most diverse ecosystems on the planet, but they are also one of the most threatened by climate change. At the Palma Aquarium, on Mallorca, a team of marine conservationists and experts work to protect and propagate corals, caring for Europe’s largest collection of living corals, made up of 70 different species.
A research and conservation centre
Palma Aquarium has its own coral farm, where Mediterranean and tropical corals from the Indian, Pacific and Atlantic Oceans are cultivated. The Palma Aquarium team has built up an extensive knowledge of coral farming, which has resulted in a number of research projects.
At its coral farm, fragments are collected from the display tanks and placed in new growth substrates. The fragments are kept in specialised tanks, where they receive all the care they need for healthy growth. This meticulous work has allowed the aquarium to accumulate a large reserve of corals, contributing not only to its research activity, but also to the conservation of endangered species.
Europe’s largest collection of living corals
Palma Aquarium currently conserves more than 2,000 corals. Some of the oldest corals are more than 20 years old and have grown from small fragments no bigger than a fist to up to two metres in size. This magnificent collection of living corals, the largest in Europe, features more than 70 different species exhibited in over two dozen tanks throughout the park.
Discover the secrets of coral with the Backstage Tour
With its Backstage Tour, Palma Aquarium offers visitors the chance to discover what goes on behind the scenes of our exhibitions. During this experience, marine biologists and coral experts take small groups to visit the “nurseries” where the reefs of tomorrow are growing. Here, visitors can enjoy sensorial experiences and learn about the biology of the corals and the essential role they play in marine ecology.
What’s more, during the Backstage Tour, participants will also learn about other conservation projects run by the Palma Aquarium Foundation, ranging from the nursehound sharks to Mediterranean seahorses and sea turtles. Through education, research and breeding, Palma Aquarium is contributing to the conservation of Mallorca’s fascinating underwater world.
A unique experience on Mallorca
Palma Aquarium is not just an aquarium: it is a conservation and education centre that provides a unique way of discovering all the beauty and fragility of the underwater world. This includes discovering what goes on behind the scenes with the Backstage Tour or admiring its amazing exhibitions. Palma Aquarium invites visitors to dive into a thrilling educational adventure that inspires respect and appreciation for our oceans.
