"Som de la Mar"

Education - Protection - Conservation

"Som de la Mar"

"Som de la Mar" (We are the Sea) is Palma Aquarium’s commitment to our land and our waters. Our aim is to turn every visit into a journey of discovery that transforms curiosity into action. Because in order to care for the Mediterranean, we must first understand it, listen to it and feel that it belongs to us. Protecting it is a responsibility we all share.

We give the ocean a voice to encourage understanding and admiration for the beauty of the marine world, as part of our determination to raise awareness and help make our planet a better place.

Our goal is achieved through direct actions driven by Palma Aquarium and its Foundation, rooted in three main areas:

Inspiring the guardians of tomorrow

EDUCATION

We believe that we only protect what we love. And it's for that reason that we make each visit a lesson in life, where science steps out of the textbooks and comes to life.

  • Children’s activities: our school visits, themed birthday parties and holiday camps are not just about fun; each of these activities integrates educational and awareness-raising activities to give every visit a purpose.
  • Experience Labs & Ocean Pills: bite-sized scientific learning and sensory experiences integrated into each stage of the Aquarium journey, included in the admission fee.
  • Ecos del Mediterráneo: free expert-led talks exploring the challenges facing our sea, led by our Foundation.
  • Beyond the Aquarium: family activities in public spaces and major events, such as Conte Contat storytelling sessions and other creative workshops, ensuring the message reaches every corner of the community.

Acting when the sea needs us

PROTECTION

The sea is sending out distress signals, and we are here to respond. We protect those who have no voice and equip you with the tools to become part of the solution too.

  • 24/7 rescue network: we are the organisation responsible for responding to stranded marine wildlife in the Balearic Islands. In an emergency, our protocols are activated immediately to rescue sea turtles, cetaceans, and sharks in danger.
  • Recovery centre: we lead the OCEMIB programme for the protection of threatened marine species. Through this scientific project, we can guarantee the diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of all the animals that come into our care.
  • Recycling and circular economy: we implement responsible internal management processes to minimise our environmental impact, transforming waste into new resources for the Aquarium.

Restoring the balance of the blue

CONSERVATION

As well as working for the health of our sea, we are also committed to regenerating what has already been lost. We investigate and act to ensure that the Mediterranean of tomorrow conserves all the treasures that were passed onto us.

  • Breeding and recovery projects: we lead scientific programmes for the breeding of vulnerable species under controlled conditions. From the Head-Starting programme, designed to ensure the survival of hatchling sea turtles, to the breeding and reintroduction of key Mediterranean species such as the nursehound shark and the seahorse
  • Conservation of the natural environment: we take direct action to protect marine habitats through beach clean-up initiatives and the conservation of Posidonia oceanica, removing plastic from our coastlines and raising awareness of the essential role it plays.
  • Research and partnerships: we collaborate with scientists and international organisations to study the health of the sea, providing vital data to support the development of global conservation policies.
