Palma Aquarium installs 5 charging points for electric vehicles thanks to the MOVES III Plan to promote sustainable mobility

The MOVES III Programme, which is also frequently referred to as the ‘Plan MOVES III’ is a Spanish government initiative designed to promote sustainable mobility. The programme provides financial support to encourage the purchase of electric vehicles and the installation of charging facilities. MOVES III is included in the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan and aligns with one of its cross-cutting focus areas: ecological transition. It is a measure aimed at reducing CO₂ emissions and promoting cleaner, more efficient transport in Spain.

Palma Aquarium has installed 5 charging points for electric vehicles: an electric charger in the staff car park, at a cost of €5,044.32, and four electric chargers in the visitors’ car park, for a total investment of €22,679.55: €1,250.66 and €5,623.02 respectively were subsidised by the MOVES III programme, funded by the European Union’s Next Generation funds through the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan of Spain’s Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge.

The MOVES III programme was launched in 2021 with the following objectives:

  • To increase the number of electric vehicles. The plan offers subsidies for the purchase of electric and hydrogen vehicles, reducing dependence on fossil fuels as well as greenhouse gas emissions.
  • To expand charging infrastructures. MOVES III provides support for the installation of charging points for electric vehicles, both in public and private spaces, in order to improve accessibility and facilitate their use.
  • To drive sustainable mobility in private enterprise and public organisations, encouraging vehicle fleet renewal and allowing for more energy-efficient transport.

According to initial estimates from the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, Plan MOVES III will prevent the emission of more than 450,000 tonnes of CO₂.
